CASE STUDIES

Telecoms Success

Ash had been unemployed for over 18 months after leaving his previous role in warehouse operations. Despite actively seeking work, he struggled to secure interviews and felt his skills were no longer relevant in a changing job market. His confidence had dropped, and he was unsure what direction to take next.
Ash enrolled on our Telecoms Engineer Skills Bootcamp designed to help individuals develop the technical and employability skills needed for entry-level roles in the telecommunications industry. The course covered key areas such as fibre installation, health and safety, customer service, and teamwork.

Alongside technical training, Ash received tailored employability support, including:

  • One-to-one coaching on interview techniques and CV preparation

  • Confidence-building workshops

  • Employer engagement sessions and introductions to industry partners

After attending interviews with one of our employer partners at our premises, Ash was offered a full-time position as a Trainee Telecoms Engineer. He has now started his new role and is thriving, with positive feedback from both his employer and colleagues.

Impact:

  • Successfully transitioned from long-term unemployment to sustainable employment

  • Gained new industry-recognised skills and confidence

  • Demonstrated the effectiveness of combining training with direct employer engagement

"My first day was today, I've got a van and all my uniform and done my induction, my first proper work day is tomorrow so I'm really looking forward to it.

just want to say a massive thank you to you all at Community Links for getting me this start and for all your help"

Damian's IT Tech Joy

Damian had experienced a challenging period in his life due to health concerns, which affected his confidence and ability to secure stable employment. Despite these difficulties, he remained determined to rebuild his career and used his time out of work to self-study and upskill in IT, developing strong technical knowledge through online learning and personal projects.
When Damian connected with our team, we recognised his potential and drive. Through our support Skills Bootcamp for IT Technicians, he received:

  • Technical training, designed by employers to upskill individuals and provide job ready, relevant skills.

  • Coaching to prepare for interviews, focusing on confidence-building and presenting his strengths effectively

We also provided a supportive environment that helped Damian rebuild his confidence and manage the transition back into work at his own pace.

With the help of Community Links and Lancashire Skills Bootcamps, Damian successfully secured a position with Daisy Group as a 2nd Line IT Technician. His employer has praised his technical ability, positive attitude, and commitment to learning — all key qualities that have helped him make a strong start in his new role.

Impact:

  • Returned to employment after overcoming significant personal challenges

  • Secured a skilled position with a reputable employer in the IT industry

  • Demonstrated resilience, self-motivation, and the value of tailored employability support

Quote from Damian:

“It’s been a long journey, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come. The support I received helped me get back on track and reminded me that I still have a lot to offer. Getting this role with Daisy Group has given me a real sense of purpose again.”

Community Links find a gem

Community Links Skills Bootcamp in Telecoms Engineering has been a great success across Lancashire.

By providing unemployed individuals across the region with skills, qualifications and knowledge to become fibre engineers, utilities operatives and wiring technicians, the Skills Bootcamp has been a steady source of recruitment for local employers.

However, one trainee took the eye of Community Links, lead tutor Nigel Tomkins.

"Tony showed a real dedication to learn everything about the sector.  He clearly had a great attitude and combined with his experience and willingness to learn he was a great trainee".

As a result, Tony was offered a job by Community Links directly as a trainee tutor.

Tony was delighted by the opportunity and has grabbed it with both hands.

"Community Links had already shown me how they were suporting people across Lancashire and I was delighted to be offered a chance to to join their team".

Tony has gone on to start his assessors award training and has supported Nigel in the classroom.  His own experience really helps the new students to see what they can achieve on a Skills Bootcamp.
